The hottest of the hot hatches

With horsepower and torque figures right around 300 and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, this Golf has the ability to launch you from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds. It can do a lap of the Nurburgring in 8:15, but who’s counting. The bottom line is it’s the fastest car Volkswagen makes. This year you have the option of getting a traditional manual transmission if you’re a real performance purist. Otherwise the dual-clutch DSG automatic can keep the revs up in the fun zone for you.

Besides the impressive powertrain, what separates the R from the Golf GTI is tons of cool details. After the more aggressive front and rear fascias, the next thing you’ll probably notice is the 18-inch Cadiz wheels and R badging, including on the big brake calipers. There’s also dual exhaust and lowered suspension on the outside and cool blue interior ambient lighting on the inside. But for all its style and power, don’t forget it’s still a Golf. So you can seat five or fold down the seats to create a massive trunk space for whatever you need to carry.
